Isn't tile waterproof by itself?+

Epoxy grout vs regular grout — what is the difference in a shower?+
This is about grout, the product in the joints between tiles — not an epoxy floor. Regular grout is cement-based: porous, able to absorb water and stains, and in need of sealing to stay clean-looking. Epoxy grout is resin-based: stain-resistant and effectively waterproof in the joint, with no sealing to keep up. In a shower, where joints take water and soap every day, that is the difference between grout you maintain and grout you mostly clean and forget.
Does epoxy grout replace the waterproofing behind the tile?+
No — and that distinction is the whole point of this page. Epoxy grout makes the joints themselves resist water and stains, and it costs more than cement grout and is harder and faster-setting to install, so it needs an experienced installer. But water still has to be stopped as a system behind and beneath the tile, with membranes, sealed seams and corners, and a correctly sloped pan. Epoxy grout is a better joint; waterproofing is what keeps the wall behind the shower dry. A good shower has both.
