Why Your LVP Is Buckling — and How Arizona Sun and Slab Moisture Cause It

Why is my LVP buckling? In Arizona it is almost always heat expansion against a missing expansion gap, or moisture pushing up from the concrete slab. Here is the diagnosis by symptom and how to prevent it.

Why is my LVP buckling?

LVP buckles when the planks expand and have nowhere to go. In Arizona the two usual drivers are heat — direct sun through sliders or a home left hot while vacant — expanding the floor against walls with too little expansion gap, and moisture vapor rising from the concrete slab, which softens adhesive on glue-down floors and pushes floating floors from below. Buckling is a symptom; the cause is almost always temperature, moisture, or an installation that skipped the prep that handles both.

The pattern tells you which one. Buckling in the sunniest room points to heat. Buckling near bathrooms, kitchens, or exterior walls points to moisture.

Symptom: tenting and peaking at the joints

When plank ends lift into little tents along the joints, the floor grew longer than the space allowed. Vinyl expands with heat, and a Phoenix room with west-facing glass can heat a dark floor well past 120 degrees at the surface. If the installer left less than the specified quarter-inch gap at the walls — or later cabinetry, a heavy island, or door casing pins the floor down — the pressure releases upward at the weakest joints.

The fix starts with freeing the floor: re-cutting proper expansion space at the pinched points often lets a tented floor settle back flat if the locks are not already broken.

Symptom: gapping and end separation

Gaps are buckling's dry-season opposite. Planks installed in a hot house, or installed without acclimation, shrink as the home cools and the air dries, and the short ends pull apart. Broken locking tabs from an uneven slab make it worse: the floor flexes as you walk it, the locks fatigue, and the ends wander.

Small gaps in the driest weeks that close again are mostly cosmetic. Gaps you can fit a credit card into, that keep growing, mean the locks have failed or the floor was never properly engaged.

Symptom: soft spots, bubbles, and adhesive failure

On glue-down LVP, bubbles and loose planks usually mean moisture. Slab vapor pressure pushes up, plasticizes the adhesive, and the bond lets go — often first near plumbing walls or where a past leak wet the slab. On floating floors, spongy soft spots usually mean the opposite problem: a low spot in the slab that was never filled, letting the floor flex over a void.

Both need the source fixed first. Re-gluing planks over a wet slab, or floating new planks over the same dip, just schedules the same failure for next summer.

How buckling is prevented in the first place

Four steps prevent nearly every case: test the slab for moisture before installation and mitigate if readings are high; prep the slab flat to the manufacturer's tolerance; acclimate the flooring 48 to 72 hours in the home at normal temperature; and leave the full specified expansion gap at every wall, casing, and fixed object. Keeping the home below about 85 degrees while away in summer protects the floor too.

None of these steps is expensive. All of them are cheaper than a tear-out.

Frequently asked questions

Can buckled LVP be fixed without replacing the whole floor?+

Sometimes. If the locking system is intact, relieving pinched expansion points and letting the floor settle can fix tenting. Broken locks, moisture-damaged adhesive, or a slab problem usually means replacing the affected area — and fixing the cause first.

What is a slab moisture test before flooring installation?+

It measures how much water vapor is moving through the concrete, using in-slab humidity probes or surface tests. Most flooring has a published moisture limit; installing over a wetter slab without mitigation is a leading cause of buckling and adhesive failure in Arizona.

Does direct sun through sliding doors damage LVP?+

It can. Surface temperatures on sun-struck vinyl can exceed the product's rated limit, causing expansion, fading, and joint stress. SPC cores, proper expansion gaps, and window film or shades on the harshest glass all reduce the risk.
