Urine & water cleanup
Accidents, spilled water bowls, mop water — all of it sits on a waterproof surface until you clean it. No swelling, no staining, no odor soaked into a core. Cleanup is a paper towel, not a claim.
For dog owners · East Valley, Arizona
Puppies in training, seniors with accidents, the rescue who marks the same corner — if your dog pees indoors, your floor is either waterproof through its whole body or it is slowly being destroyed. Here is the floor we install for East Valley dog homes, and why it works.

Urine is mostly water with a schedule: it finds seams. In laminate, it reaches the fiberboard core and the edges swell — and swollen laminate does not recover, it just stays swollen, smelly and visible. In hardwood it soaks in and stains. Even on floors that survive the liquid, accidents that seep under a floating floor sit against the slab, where trapped moisture grows mildew you can smell but can't see.
The fix is not a coating or a promise. It is a floor that is waterproof in its body: rigid-core luxury vinyl plank (SPC), where the plank itself is a plastic composite that cannot absorb, swell or rot — with joints tight enough that accidents stay on top, where a wipe and a mop end the story.

The wear layer takes every nail click and 90-pound stop at the back door. At 20 mil — commercial grade — it holds its finish for years where a 12 mil residential layer wears through in the traffic lanes.
Desert grit tracked in on paw pads works like fine sandpaper; summer sun through big sliders bakes floor surfaces. SPC's rigid core stays stable on hot concrete slabs, and a matte mid-tone finish hides what wear does occur.
Nearly every East Valley home sits on a concrete slab. SPC is the slab-friendly spec: the rigid core resists dents under big-dog launch loads and bridges the slab's temperature swings. Before we install, we test the slab's moisture and prep it flat — because vapor trapped under any floating floor can grow mildew, even when the plank on top is waterproof. That prep is the difference between "waterproof floor" and a waterproof system.
This is an actual Honest & Affordable LVP job — drag the handle to compare before and after. The floor in the after photo is the same waterproof SPC construction spec'd below, already living with an Arizona family.

AfterBeforeThis is the exact checklist we spec on dog homes — the same one from our guide on wear layers. One warning from that guide: wear layer thickness is not plank thickness. A thick, cushy plank with a thin 12 mil skin still scratches through fast.
The price gap is small; the lifespan gap is not. Stepping from 12 mil to 20 mil typically adds well under a dollar per square foot on material — often a few hundred dollars on a whole home, standing between a five-to-seven-year floor and one that can run fifteen years or more with dogs. Run your own numbers in the flooring cost calculator — LVP is published at $4.50–$9 per square foot installed.

Waterproof rigid-core LVP (SPC) with a 20 mil wear layer. The plank is waterproof through its entire body, so urine sits on the surface until you clean it instead of soaking into a core — and the commercial-grade wear layer stands up to the nails and grit that come with dogs.
No — that is exactly the failure it prevents. Urine cannot swell a plastic-composite core the way it swells laminate's fiberboard. Wipe it up, mop as usual, and the floor is unchanged. What matters is tight, well-engaged joints so liquid stays on top where it belongs.
Everything a dog does lands on the wear layer first: nails, skids, and desert grit dragged in on paw pads acting like fine sandpaper. Twenty mil gives those forces roughly 40 percent more material to get through than 12 mil — the difference between a floor that looks good in year ten and one worn through in year four.
Yes — SPC's rigid core is the slab-friendly spec: it resists dents under big-dog launch loads and handles the temperature swings of an Arizona slab. We still test slab moisture before installation, because vapor trapped under any floating floor can grow mildew even when the plank itself is waterproof.
Per our published 2026 Phoenix cost guide, LVP runs $4.50 to $9 per square foot installed. Stepping from a 12 mil to a 20 mil wear layer typically adds well under a dollar per square foot on material — on a 1,000 square foot job, often a few hundred dollars between a five-to-seven-year floor and one that can run fifteen years or more with dogs.
